Providence Golf Club – Richmond, VA
Back in 1998, I used to ride by what is now Providence Golf Club every day on my way to work, thinking "Man what a waste of land this is. Someone should put a golf course on it." I had no idea that this was the old Pocoshock Golf Course, or that it would be reopened as Providence.
Lester George did a great job on the redesign, getting every bit of his moneys-worth out of the land he was given. While not the longest course in the world, Providence provides enough variety to keep players coming back week after week.
The par-5 12th hole is a true test of manhood, as a small creek and a well-placed tree make a second shot layup just as difficult as going for the green in two (if not moreso). And while eminently reachable, the 18th didn't yield an eagle to me until this year.
Mix in a great staff and fairly reasonable prices (at least compared to Independence), and Providence is a great place to play. One of my favorites in the Richmond area.
